Moving home can be a daunting experience, yet it’s often something we need to do. The reason can be positive, such as moving into a bigger and better home, or it may be negative, such as moving away from nasty neighbours. Whatever the reason may be, moving home is a stressful experience.
That being said, there are ways you can at least reduce the stress. In today’s blog, we explore many of the top moving tips you need to know. Let’s begin with the most fundamental of them all – the need to keep a list!
Keeping a List
If you’re familiar with moving homes, you know how many factors you need to consider. After all, your home contains just about everything in your life. It’s important to stay organized. Part of that organizational endeavour involves making lists – detailed lists! You need to sensibly account for where your belongings are. You need to structure what to box, where to box it and whether you’ve safely set away any important items.
The last thing you need, after all, is for something to go lost. Let this happen half a dozen times and you have a readymade nightmare on day 1 of moving in. And, from here, that’s where we move onto our second top moving tip – the need to overestimate!
Overestimate your Move
It’s easy to overlook how many belongings you actually own.
After all, you walk by the belongings each and every day. It’s easy to lose track of just how much stuff you own. Most of what you own is probably tucked tight away, too – giving the illusion you need fewer boxes than you do. That’s where overestimation comes in. There’s nothing worse than underestimating how many boxes you need to pack away all your belongings. Whatever number of boxes you arrive at, be sure to order another 10-20 boxes more at the very least.
Organizing those Boxes
And with those extra boxes comes an extra layer of stress, right?
Well, not really. It doesn’t have to be stressful if you have a clear plan. In this case, try to organize your belongings based on the room they currently belong to. Then, simply color-code the boxes for each room. Perhaps marked blue for the kitchen, yellow for the living room and black for the garage. You can, at least then, quickly organize where the boxes should move to on Day 1 of move-in. Unpacking becomes that much easier!
Keeping the Personal Aside
Naturally, there are belongings that have a much more personal significance.
Not only in terms of personal or sentimental value but also documentation value, too. Whatever important personal possessions and documents you have, set them aside and pack them accordingly. These are the items that would or could cause the greatest distress. There may be more than 2 people living in your home, though – in which case each member of the house should pack their own personal belongings separately – and, in line with the moving tip above, to color-code those boxes accordingly.
By following the above moving home tips, things get that much easier. Moving home is never a stress-free experience. That being said, there are steps you can take to lessen the burden and reduce the stress. That’s where the above tips come in.
