When he founded Atlas in 2015, Brett Robillard was leveraging on more than 20 years of experience in architecture and interior design he acquired in Las Vegas, Boston, New York, Chicago, and even overseas in Shanghai.
Among his masterpieces are the very first custom homes he developed in the Summit, an exclusive master-planned community in the prestigious Summerlin in the Las Vegas valley. The home is known as the Cascade. How the project came together is the result of the confluence of several factors – a vision, motivation, and technical pursuit.
The Story of the Cascade
Robillard was commissioned to design Cascade in late 2015. The planning was discussed among himself, the client, general contractor. The meeting of these commercial-focused professionals proved to be an incredibly effective way to approach a residential project.
The objective was to build a sturdier home, with the longevity of the structure, and fast construction time in one complete package. Within two months, the framing, which was made entirely of steel, was completed.
The project was called Cascade because the goal was to have the structure visually blend with the landscape and extend in all directions from the natural terrain. It has to have Strip, mountain, and golf course views.
A 100-foot-long horizontal canopy creates a distinctive threshold between the two main areas that divide the home. The canopy passes through the main living space until another 17 feet over the pool’s south end.
To create a contrast with the brighter stucco surfaces, weathering steel, blackened steel, and custom-treated metallic bronze was carefully threaded into the project. A local stone that was quarried only in Jean and nowhere else was used.
Creating a Timeless Design
Cascade follows Victorian period design predominantly to create something that had the timeless features of great architecture. The home was designed to emulate the feeling of being in the desert while hiking through Red Rock Canyon where the experiential qualities of space are enhanced by punctuating the colors as dramatic shadowing and blade of light with striking materials.
Since the desert is a place of delicate balance, a home that embraces the site and accentuates the beauty of the place through a connection to nature was created. The home shapes views of our landscape, the community, and our city.
The project team wanted that a project this large was going to be as environmentally sensitive as well. Several energy modeling programs were considered in determining the optimum locations of windows, and where more shadow and mass were needed.
The place has the opportunity to be a NET-ZERO home. The team is studying installing a solar panel array in the hope to remove the home from the grid. With this opportunity afforded to the design team, they can’t help but become stewards of the environment.
They hope that the home will be cherished by the client and their family. They also desire that this becomes part of a positive continuum that builds on past work and influences future design at any scale.
Robillard and the team consider it an honor to be part of the first project groups to move forward in the Summit. Their vision and approach which combines liveability with modern technology allow for a unique yet comfortable luxury development that will be a great model for future Las Vegas homes.
Robillard looks forward to seeing the community take shape with a wide variety of custom homes and designing the next one!
