Mike Huhn and his wife Linda decided to retire early, sold their Ohio-based property management company in 2012, and moved to the outskirts of Las Vegas. In 2015, they commissioned custom home builder Blue Heron to design and build a three-structure hillside compound on a 2.2-acre lot on Dragon Ridge, an upscale gated neighborhood located in the MacDonald Highlands area in Henderson, NV, around 13 miles from the Las Vegas Strip.
In building the property, the contractor took advantage of the lot’s elevated location to accommodate the amazing views of the nearby mountains, the Las Vegas skyline, and the golf greens below. Right upon stepping into the triple-height glass atrium, through the imposing glass doors, you’ll be awed by the breathtaking vista in front of you. The home will let you enjoy the best views Las Vegas has to offer, daytime or nighttime.
The builder was given specific instruction not to think about the budget and everything just has to be the best.
What came out of the Nevada desert two years after the construction was a 15,000-square-foot ultramodern mega-mansion with a major focus on the pursuit of recreation and entertainment. The Huhns, who have a strong passion for sports, filled the mansion with all the conceivable sporting amenities. They include a regulation half-size indoor basketball, tennis court, swimming pool, a professional two-lane tenpin bowling alley, table tennis, a game of pool, a state-of-the-art gym, putting green, and three movie projection theater rooms with giant screen TVs.
The elevator in the four-level home does away with the conventional numerals and replaces them with the descriptions PLAY, EAT. SLEEP, and VIEW as you go up. Most of the sports facilities are on the PLAY or basement levels. The second floor EAT level is a high-ceilinged, open-plan space that takes you seamlessly from the living room to the dining room, swimming pool deck, and then to a luxurious covered patio.
The spacious gourmet kitchen has three islands, two double Wolf ovens, and twin Sub-Zero freezers. There is a Lynx grill and a pizza oven on the adjoining outdoor patio.
On the third-floor master bedroom known as “The Cube”, the ‘glass wall’ design concept is best exhibited. Cantilevered out over a rock face with floor-to-ceiling glass walls on three sides that seem to float, the room provides a 180-degree view of the Strip’s light show at night.
There are airy terraces on either side where one can lounge. Behind the bedroom, there is a 27-by-10-foot walk-in closet, a grand master bathroom fitted with a free-standing designer tub, and a huge, cube-shaped glass shower.
Aside from the master bedroom, there are two additional junior suites with their own wing and a staircase that lead to yet another bedroom. In all, there are six bedrooms and 11 bathrooms.
On the fourth floor is where you can watch the Big Games from the wall of big-screen TVs.
Powered glass doors that get concealed in in-wall pockets are installed in almost all the rooms, allowing for the ultimate in indoor-outdoor living.
A two-story guest house detached from the main house has complete amenities for a luxurious visitor stay. It has a bedroom, living room, rooftop terrace, and fitness center. Another standalone building is where the half-basketball court is housed. It features double-wide glass doors to let fresh air in.
Due to differing interests in the market for this high-tech, contemporary design mansion focused on sports, the selling price for the property has varied over time. Since October 2018 when the Huhns were asking $15 million, the price tag is now $13.75 million.
